Disney Soda Fountain is my Whitecastle

In 2012 I took my first trip to Walt Disney World, I loved it. I had a blast, I got into pin trading. I was so hyped from the excitement that I had to stop at every pin cart, and check the cast lanyards for pins. Living in Canada has it's downfalls in the world of Pin Trading. I have been very lucky to get to Disney World the past 2 years and I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to Pin Trade the past couple of years.

But like a knight on a quest, there is one place I seek. A place where limited edition pins are obtainable, a place where every pin trader should want to go, the Disney Soda Fountain. I learned of the Disney Soda Fountain not to long ago, and as I have seen the pictures of the Pins you can get there, I knew this was my Whitecastle. I dream of going to such a place where it is about the pins, and I guess while I am there I will get and ice cream...

Scoop Sanderson

Scoop Sanderson is one of best and brightest characters on Main Street U.S.A in the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort. Scoop is the Ace Reporter for the Main Street Gazette, he is often seen wearing a hat that says press on the side of it. He is also well known as a "Town Councilmen" but most of all he is one of, if not the biggest "Pinthusiast". On certain days, Scoop is known to play games in the streets with the Walt Disney World Resort guests. He also loves to share his interest in Disney Pins with people of all ages.

Scoop has been pin trading from the very beginning and has a wealth of knowledge on Disney Pins. He loves to trade pins, but not with strangers, so he may ask you your name first. Scoop is a very well mannered person and it would be in the best interest to we well mannered when you trade with him as well. If you are lucky enough, Scoop with give you a Disney Pin that has been specially designed for him, and he will even sign it to!

To say Scoop is the biggest thing for pin trading is an understatement. There have been about 26 Disney Pins made based off of Scoop. When I head back to Walt Disney World in January, I am very much looking forward to meeting Scoop.

Pin Feature June.23,2013

Today I am featuring my pin of Jack Jack from the Incredibles. It is an open edition pin from when the movie was released. Unfortunately there are a lot of fakes of this pin coming from China of this pin, so it is hard to authenticate this pin. But I still enjoy this pin as it comes from a great Disney/Pixar movie.

Disney World With Non-Pin Traders

When traveling to Disney World or even Disneyland, often you will be with a family or a big group of people, and sometimes even just a couple. When you go with larger groups or even as small as couples, you run into the chance that not everybody will enjoy Pin Trading as much as you. A very good example is my wife and I, I could Pin Trade the whole time and be happy, whereas she is not as avid a Pin Trader as me, but she still enjoys to see the spoils from my trades.

The key is compromise, yes just like a great marriage, you have to be mindful of what everybody wants to do and plan accordingly. For instance, on our last trip to Disney World, we had someone with us who needed a wheelchair, she didn't want to try and maneuver through the park, so three of the members of our group took the train around Magic Kingdom with her, but myself and the other pin boy wanted to go through the park. We compromised that the two of us would go through the park and trade, while the other three rode the train, and we all met up at Big Thunder Mountain in Frontierland.

At the end of the day, you want to make sure you have the best vacation possible, you don't want to put your wants in the way of what your family or group wants. Make sure to compromise and Pin Trade when you can.

Trade for them, Display Them!

Hello Pin Lovers,

Today I am going to talk about different ways to display your pins. I mean, you put all of the effort into trading for the rarest, the coolest pins you can find, why hide them away? Be proud in your collection, show them off, brag about them, just have fun with it.

One of the common ways to show off your pins is by buying a pin case from Disney. I have bought a total of 3 pin cases, as pictured below.

The two bigger cases hold the collection I am keeping, the smaller case on the right is holding the pins I am taking to trade when I return to Disney World.

Of course one of the best ways to display your collections, especially while in the Disney parks, is lanyards. There are hundreds to choose from and I always make sure as soon as I get to my hotel, I pick my new lanyard for the trip. On my last trip to Disney World, I chose the Star Wars Lanyard.

Last but not least, a great way to display your collection in your own home is by shadow boxes. Shadow boxes allow you to have your pins displayed on your wall for all of your friends and family to see.

How To Spot a Fake

Disney pin trading and collecting has become a very popular activity at the Disney Parks and Cruise lines, it has managed to create a demand for several types of pins. Disney pins are manufactured in China, and often times after a certain type of pin has been created, the left over mold is used to create what is called “Scrappers” or counterfeit pins. The quality is the biggest and easiest way to know, because Disney is a company that takes the quality of their product very seriously.

A majority of these scrappers or counterfeit pins have made their way into the parks, due to many people not even realizing they are fake. I myself managed to grab some the first time I was pin trading. A place like Ebay is one of the most common places to pick up fakes. Telltale signs to look for when purchasing pins on Ebay is, where the pin is coming from; generally if the pin is coming from China, there is a very good chance the pin is fake. If possible, always try to buy pins from the Orlando or southern California areas. Another thing to look for, if the price is really good, like 20 cents per pin, it is very likely that pin or set of pins is fake.

Pictured below are 2 fake pins, the Mickey ghost pin has very subtle differences, where as the Minnie pin is and obvious fake.

Fake Pins

Real Pin Set

Another common way to spot fakes, is by the spelling. Due to the lower quality of making these pins, spelling mistakes are very common, as pictured below.

Color and weight are also good indicators if you have a fake pin. Scrapper pins are normally a lot light than real pins, and once you are really into pin trading and have handled many different pins, you will be able to tell the weight of real pins better. With color, the pin will be either faded or for instance, things like eyes may not have been colored properly.

Also on newer pins that feature the stamped Mickey head pattern on the back, the fake pins the pattern will have a border around the edge, as opposed to the real ones, the pattern will continue over the edge with no border.

PinPics and Dizpins are great resources to check and see if your pins are real or fake. Dizpins has a catalogue of counterfeit pins. PinPics goes into great detail, included with pictures.

At the end of the day, don't let the fake pins keep you from enjoying the fun of pin trading. It can be frustrating, but every trader will tell you they have encountered fake pins and some may have fake pins in their collection. As I come across more fakes, I will post pictures of them.
